Supporting people with Loss and Grief

Talking about love

Catherine, a woman with learning disabilities, recently said ‘why don’t people talk to me about my sad feelings, about people I love who have died.  My sad feelings when support workers I like suddenly leave?‘   This essential course has been developed in response to Catherine’s request.

People with learning disabilities are often insufficiently prepared and supported to understand and deal with loss and grief in their lives, whether this is caused by, for example, the death of a parent or friend, or other losses such as those caused by life changes. So often the feelings of sadness and loss are ignored. This is often the result of supporters not being sure about how to have a conversation which may feel difficult. We know it isn’t the easiest conversation to have. This one day course will enable participants to offer planned support around bereavement, loss and grief.

I always found it hard to talk about sadness with the people I support. Just one day and I feel so much more confident AND I know where to get help.
